For students, summer break is always filled with activity, and the same is true at Carthage! Here are some of the improvements we’ve made on campus.
WIRELESS CONNECTIONS
New Wi-Fi networks have been set up in all Carthage academic and student life buildings, the first phase in a campus-wide upgrade. Students, faculty, and staff can connect using the Carthage-Campus network; see the LIS website for setup instructions. Similar Wi-Fi upgrades are planned for the residence halls in summer 2026.
NURSING LABS
The Nursing Education Center in Lentz Hall has reopened after the first phase of renovations. To supplement students’ clinical experience, the space now has two acute care patient simulation suites with responsive mannequins and a real-time monitoring system. The next phase is underway on the lower level of Hedberg Library, a project that will more than quadruple Carthage’s nursing space.
Crews completed upgrades to the sound and ventilation (heating and air conditioning) systems in A. F. Siebert Chapel late last spring, so many of you will experience the new ambience for the first time at a worship service or music performance this fall.
DINING OPTION
Parkhurst Dining is launching Ember’s Diner, a new “breakfast for dinner” eatery in the Stu that will share the Flex Kitchen with returning lunch favorite Watson’s Subs. The menu will feature pancakes, French toast, omelettes, yogurt parfaits, and weekly specials. As part of the Flex Kitchen, this concept arose from Carthage students’ feedback.
PUBLIC SAFETY APP
As part of the College’s new emergency notification system, 911Cellular, students and employees can download the CampusShield mobile app for free. App users can submit safety concerns instantly with just a swipe, set up a virtual tracker so trusted contacts can monitor their safety, and more.
Firebirds swimmers and divers installed new starting blocks at the HARIBO Pool. Made by Quikblox, these blocks feature fins and handles that promise even faster starts for the Carthage men’s and women’s competitors. In addition, courts at the Smeds Tennis Center were resurfaced.
OTHER IMPROVEMENTS
Events in TWC 128 will look and sound even better, thanks to new lighting and sound equipment.
Office space on one of Lentz Hall’s lower levels was converted to a new classroom (LH 200).
New Mac mini computers and 27-inch monitors were installed in the graphic design lab (JAC 215).
Combine all of that with some behind-the-scenes maintenance in campus infrastructure and residential buildings, and you get a fall semester that’s ripe for learning, competition, and personal growth.
