As a recipient of the Founders Scholarship, Shannon Campione ’27 is able to fully immerse herself in her studies and enjoy the college experience without the added stress of financial burdens. One of the main reasons she chose Carthage was its exceptional study abroad programs — a decision that has already led her to unforgettable experiences around the world. She has traveled to Honduras and Costa Rica, with plans to visit Sweden and Thailand in the future. These immersive trips have not only enriched her personal growth but also shaped her academic path as a marketing and management major with a graphic design minor. From earning her scuba diving certification and exploring coral reefs to swimming with sharks and seeing monkeys swinging in trees, Shannon has gained incredible experiences that few colleges could offer. “These trips opened my eyes to a whole new perspective of the world,” she says. “I highly recommend everyone to take advantage of these opportunities!”

In addition to the global opportunities she’s embraced, Shannon has also found valuable support on campus as she prepares for her future career. After expressing difficulty finding an internship, she met with her career specialist through The Aspire Program, Carthage’s career development initiative. Thanks to her specialist’s connection with a company, Shannon was able to apply and land an interview. She encourages other students to take full advantage of The Aspire Program’s resources. “You never know where going to The Aspire Center can take you!” she says.

“I can’t say enough good things about the J-Term study tours Carthage has to offer.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of its small size and top-tier study abroad program! I’ve gone on two J-Term trips and am going on a third to Sweden with the School of Business and Economics.”

Faculty mentors

“The professors here at Carthage care on a whole other level. They’re attentive and understanding, and their main goal is to help students retain knowledge so they can take what they learn into the real world. I especially want to highlight professors Richard Bruce, Laura Huaracha, Jennifer Clark, Anita Lang, Jeff Seymour, Chris Renaud, and Breanne McGuire. I got to know each of these professors deeply due to Carthage’s small class sizes. I wouldn’t be the student I am today without their guidance, support, teachings, and most importantly — friendships.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class was Introduction to Sociology with Prof. Seymour. I wasn’t expecting this class to be one of my favorites, but I gained such a deep understanding of the world, read such informative and shocking articles, and got hands-on learning I wouldn’t get anywhere else. I still talk about the day we played capitalist monopoly, where everyone rolled a die and started with different sums of money to reflect wealth classes. Not only was this day incredibly fun, but I really got a deeper understanding of what we were learning.”

Campus involvement

“I’m currently involved in Enactus as the rose sale leader. I’m also the brand ambassador and account executive for Velocity Consulting LLC — a fully student-run consulting business in which we work with real companies to get real solutions. I’m the campus and activities director for Chi Omega Sorority, the vice president of human resources for Pi Sigma Epsilon Professional Fraternity, and I volunteer at the cat shelter near Carthage called Kindred Kitties!”

Internships or campus employment

“I’m currently a marketing intern at iManage. I get to work in their Chicago office — learning new things, working with new people daily, and gaining a whole new understanding of what I’ve learned in my classes.”

Career goal

“My career goal is to work with a marketing team focusing on design and public image. I want a job that allows me to be creative while continuously learning in my field of interest.”

Favorite memory

“My favorite memories are my J-Term trips! Of course, I have other great Carthage memories and moments, but none compare to seeing wild monkeys swinging in the trees in Costa Rica or swimming with sharks in Honduras.”

Best tip for making friends

“Join clubs! I didn’t get very involved in my freshman year besides joining a sorority; even then, I was skeptical about doing that. But taking that first step in joining Chi Omega really opened my world. I can confidently say I’m happier and a better person because of my sorority. Once I joined more organizations in my sophomore year, it opened up my network of people! You notice the difference when you can say, ‘hi’ to someone you know wherever you are on campus.”
