At Carthage, Amber Sherman ’27 is able to explore her wide range of interests. As a marketing major with minors in economics and musical theatre, she combines her academic focus with her long-standing passion for the arts. Since high school, she has been involved in music and theatre, and she continues that involvement on campus — singing in the Treble Choir, working as a stage manager, running lighting behind the scenes, and performing on stage.

In addition to her academic and artistic pursuits, Amber enjoys the many perks of living in Kenosha. She loves the daily views of Lake Michigan on her walk to classes and the variety of local spots like Anna’s on the Lake, Slip 56, and Waterfront Warehouse. She enjoys beach trips with friends on warm days, visits to the farmer’s market, and exploring seasonal events. With stores and essentials just minutes from campus, she finds it easy to enjoy everything the area has to offer. “There’s multiple things to do, and it’s fun to get off campus with friends.”

“I’ve gotten to meet and work with new people, and do things I’ve never done before. I’ve really expanded my abilities since coming to Carthage.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of the community. I felt super welcome every time I visited campus as a prospective student. The one thing that ultimately made me choose Carthage was my audition for the musical theatre program. I had the most fun at that audition, and it made me feel at home while on campus. It was also super helpful getting a mini lesson from Professor Matthew Hougland.”

Faculty mentors

“Carthage faculty are really amazing. So many of my professors care about my success as a student at Carthage. They ask questions in order to help understand the needs of students, provide resources, and offer personal one-on-one help. I’ve overcome so many obstacles in my classes because I know I have my professors to go to. They are also incredibly understanding and supportive. If I’m ever sick and need to miss a class, they are super understanding and make sure to check in with what I missed.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class has definitely been Introduction to Behavioral Neuroscience. It might seem strange as it’s not really a core topic that I’m studying, but I had the best time in that class. I can also apply what I learned to my major. Behavioral neuroscience and marketing go hand in hand sometimes because you really have to know how people think while in marketing. It was really cool to have that science class on top of the marketing classes. Plus, Professor Daniel Miller is one of my favorite professors.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class so far was definitely my Financial Accounting class. The class really challenged me, as the coursework was hard at some points. But I overcame this by utilizing my resources, such as going to a peer tutor. I also went to study sessions that a tutor held before exams and worked with another student in the class. All of those factors helped me end the class with an A.”

Campus involvement

“I am involved in a few different things on campus. I am in one of the national sororities, Chi Omega. I really love my sorority because it has opened the door to many friendships, and we get to help with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I am also in the Carthage Treble Choir. It’s not only an extracurricular, but it holds a class as well. I have grown pretty close to numerous people in that class because we spend so much time together. I really love the concerts we have, especially the Christmas Festival.”

Internships or campus employment

“I am a writing fellow in the Writing Center on campus. It is such a rewarding job because I get to help others with their writing, and I also learn more with each session.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is the library. I love going to Starbucks and seeing all my friends. I also love to sit with my friends and do work together. The Writing Center is also located in the library. Since I’ve become a writing fellow, it’s grown to be another one of my favorite places. I also love the downstairs area and all the different places to study.”

Favorite memory

“I have made so many amazing memories since coming to campus. One is meeting new people during the first week on campus as a freshman. I met some of my best friends during that week. I also really loved my first Christmas Festival with the Carthage Treble Choir. It was so much fun getting to see the decorations and just how the show came together. Another favorite memory was bid day for my sorority. The whole new member process was so insanely special to me, and I hold it so close to my heart. Another favorite memory is the experience of being involved in the shows at Carthage. They are so much fun!”

Best study tip

“I use many different ways to study. I really like working with other people. My friends and I will sometimes get together and ask each other questions that might be on the test. Doing this and coming up with ways to remember material really helps. I have also found that explaining what you are learning to someone else is also really helpful. Sometimes I have trouble focusing, so I will take my things and go to a quiet area on campus, like the library, so that I can focus and go through my course material by myself. If you really don’t understand what you’re learning, you can use on-campus resources. I have used the Peer Tutor Center and the Writing Center. Professors are also always there and want to help. I just think a combination of these things will help you study successfully. It is definitely different for each person, though!”

Best tip for making friends

“The best way to make friends is to be a part of things on campus. As a freshman, it seems so hard to get involved, but it’s so rewarding. Also, during orientation, try to talk to people and make new friends. You are all going through that week together, and it’s a great time to talk to the people around you. I made some of my best friends just from getting involved and participating in orientation. Also, if you come onto campus for any scholarship events or auditions, try talking to people there too. They could become some of your good friends.”
