This summer, recent biology graduate Ryan del Alcazar ’25 and Professor Emily Wollmuth spent six weeks at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada teaching a group of 36 high school students through the Summer Science Program, an intensive residential research program operated by SSP International (SSPI).

Prof. Emily Wollmuth mentoring students.High school participants traveled from across the United States, Canada, and around the world to take part in rigorous genomics research. The research focused on how bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics. With the guidance of Mr. del Alcazar, Prof. Wollmuth, and a team of six other instructors, the participants learned how to conduct experiments and analyze complex genomic data.

Working in small groups, participants grew the non-pathogenic bacterium Vibrio natriegens in a chemostat — a device that maintains specific environmental conditions — under antibiotic pressure. After several weeks, samples were sent for whole genome sequencing and analyzed for novel mutations that may cause increased antibiotic resistance. At the end of the program, the high schoolers had the opportunity to present their research to other students and professors.

The Summer Science Program has operated at campuses in the United States since 1959, but this summer’s program at the University of Guelph marked its first international campus.
