Nicholas Dekker ’25, a double major in marketing and music, secured a full-time position with CCB Technology following a guest presentation in his Adobe Creative Cloud class, taught by Professor Kelly Kruse.

Nicholas Dekker '25 Nicholas Dekker ’25Vice President Steve Scherer of CCB Technology, along with his team, visited Carthage earlier this semester to speak to students about careers in marketing, social media, and graphic design and about the importance of teamwork. After the presentation, Dekker reached out to inquire about job opportunities. His initiative led to an interview — and ultimately, a job offer.

“Carthage produces quality students every year, and Nick is no exception,” said Mr. Scherer. “He came to the interview prepared, engaged with three executives for over 30 minutes, and asked insightful questions throughout.”

Mr. Scherer went on to highlight three ways Dekker stood out from other candidates:

  1. Transferable Skills — “He quickly demonstrated that while he didn’t have direct sales experience, he had skills that would easily translate into the role.”
  2. Preparedness — “Nick arrived energized, brought specific examples of how he could add value at CCB, and asked great questions.”
  3. Follow-Up — “Just a few hours after the interview, Nick returned with handwritten thank-you notes — exactly the kind of initiative we value in a successful team member.”

Prof. Kruse emphasized the importance of real-world engagement in the classroom. “Bringing professionals into the classroom doesn’t just enrich learning — it creates real opportunities. Watching Nick turn a class visit into a job offer is exactly why these connections matter,” said Prof. Kruse.

Carthage continues to blend academic excellence with professional readiness, preparing students like Dekker to stand out in today’s competitive job market.
