Psychology and criminal justice student Tara Schaalma '26 recently traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada to present her work at the biennial meet... Credit: David SzymanskiSince her freshman year, Tara has worked in Professor Anthony Barnhart’s “Magic, Attentional Guidance, & Ichnochirography” laboratory, where she has contributed to scientific research examining the interface of attention and short-term memory. Her work took its inspiration from the techniques that magicians use to misdirect their audiences, making the Science of Magic Association the perfect venue for showcasing her findings.

While at the conference, she networked with researchers from a variety of fields and with magicians, including Teller (of Penn & Teller fame), who was the guest of honor at the event.

Thanks to The Aspire Center for providing financial support for Tara’s conference travel.
