Carthage students learn real-life business lessons from local Chick-fil-A owner
On Oct. 22 and 23, Carthage welcomed Jason Miley, owner of Chick-fil-A in Pleasant Prairie, as a special guest speaker in two of Professor Kelly Kruse’s classes — Visual Communication and Human Communication.
During the Visual Communication class, Mr. Miley explored the company’s visual branding and identity standards, emphasizing the importance of tone of voice, brand positioning, and creating a cohesive brand identity.
In the Human Communication class, he delved into experience standards, brand actions, and communication guardrails, sharing how tone of voice influences customer interactions and overall brand perception.
In both sessions, Mr. Miley highlighted the importance of creating remarkable customer experiences and the core values that drive Chick-fil-A’s success, including valuing diversity, helping each other win, impacting lives, moving with purpose, rising to challenges, and celebrating wins. He was joined by Robert Campbell, director of branding, and Caleb Valentine, executive director, who provided additional insights into the company’s branding and communication strategies.
Students were actively engaged, asking questions and offering input on future decisions regarding Chick-fil-A’s mobile food service truck. Mr. Miley emphasized how valuable their feedback was in shaping the company’s future plans.
“Bringing real-world experiences into the classroom is the pinnacle of higher education,” Prof. Kruse said. “It bridges the gap between learning and practicum, allowing students to see firsthand how communication strategies are implemented in successful businesses.”
Carthage is proud to offer these unique learning opportunities, giving students the chance to apply their communication skills in practical scenarios. The visit from Chick-fil-A’s leadership exemplifies how partnerships between the classroom and industry can enhance education and prepare students for future success.
