Founder of First Choice Pre-Apprenticeship Training

After graduating with a degree in political science from Carthage, M.A. Olatoye Baiyewu became the founder of First Choice Pre-Apprenticeship Training. Now retired, Mr. Baiyewu worked with underserved communities to enhance their way of life, specifically supplying resources for them to enter the building trades industry. Because of his dedication and passion for his work, the Great Lakes Community Conservation Corps named a training building in his honor, the Olatoye Baiyewu Campus.

Mr. Baiyewu stays connected with Carthage by attending alumni events, giving gifts to the College, and keeping in touch with his fraternity brothers from Delta Upsilon. As a graduate, he appreciates the community and inclusivity that the College continues to offer him. “Carthage brings out the best in me,” he says.

“Carthage prepared me to listen to the voices of the vulnerable as a way to help bridge the gap between the majority population, ethnic minorities, and women.”
