Founder of First Choice Pre-Apprenticeship Training
After graduating with a degree in political science from Carthage, M.A. Olatoye Baiyewu became the founder of First Choice Pre-Apprenticeship Training. Now retired, Mr. Baiyewu worked with underserved communities to enhance their way of life, specifically supplying resources for them to enter the building trades industry. Because of his dedication and passion for his work, the Great Lakes Community Conservation Corps named a training building in his honor, the Olatoye Baiyewu Campus.
Mr. Baiyewu stays connected with Carthage by attending alumni events, giving gifts to the College, and keeping in touch with his fraternity brothers from Delta Upsilon. As a graduate, he appreciates the community and inclusivity that the College continues to offer him. “Carthage brings out the best in me,” he says.
How has your liberal arts education benefited you?
“A liberal arts education benefited me by helping me understand why some excel and others don’t.”
What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?
“An opportunity that stemmed from my Carthage experience is being involved with the mentorship of the unheard.”
What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?
“Professors Yuri Maltsev, Brent McClintock, Dan Tobin, Annette Smith, Bill Gunderson, Jim Lochtefeld, and Barbara Bixby are a few that played a part in my success.”
What's your favorite Carthage memory?
“My favorite Carthage memory is leading students to three international conferences at Harvard, Temple, and Guelph universities. These conferences imbued greater understanding of Third World issues.”

“Go with your gut. You’ll love where you make a difference.”
