For students like Audrey Horwath ’27, Carthage has been a place to discover more about herself, her passions, and the world around her. She’s enjoyed exploring both locally and globally — diving into Kenosha’s vibrant community and traveling abroad through a J-Term study tour to Tanzania. “Some of my favorite things to do in Kenosha are going to the farmer’s market and visiting local restaurants and coffee shops,” Audrey shares. “One of my favorite places is Fizzy Bizz.”
Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage for many reasons — the location, the classes, and the majors offered. But also, Carthage just fit me.”
Faculty mentors
“Carthage faculty have impacted me in many ways. I always go to my faculty advisors for advice on picking classes and making sure I’m on track to graduate. The professors always make me feel welcome, and I can always ask them questions, which I do often.”
Campus involvement
“I am involved in a few organizations on campus. I am part of the Blitz Ultimate Frisbee Club. I also participate in the Best Buddies and the Special Olympics Club.”
Unique opportunities
“I had the opportunity to take a J-Term trip to Tanzania. It was an amazing, life-changing experience. Going on the study tour through Carthage was amazing because they had everything planned out for me. One of the professors grew up in Tanzania, which gave us a unique perspective on the country and showed us new activities. I met so many new people, created new friendships, and created lifelong memories. I would love to do another J-Term trip before I graduate; it’s a great way to earn credits and explore the world.”
Career goal
“My career goal is to become an elementary school teacher.”
Favorite spot on campus
Favorite memory
“My favorite Carthage memory is orientation week, when the College hosts food trucks and a carnival. I’ve also enjoyed signing up for the off-campus day trips that the Carthage Activities Board offers.”
Best study tip
“My best study tip is to complete as much of your work during the school week, so you can have fun on the weekend. Getting my work done early gives me the opportunity to spend time with my friends or go off campus. It’s important to carve out time for yourself and not just spend your time doing schoolwork.”
Best tip for making friends
“The best way to make friends is by participating in activities, going to sporting events, attending club meetings, and talking to your classmates. You can find people with similar interests. I’ve met a majority of my friends through classes and clubs.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“I think my 8-year-old self would be surprised and proud of where I am today. Education wasn’t my original major when I came to Carthage, but I know my younger self would be proud of all I’ve gone through and overcome to get to where I am now.”
