Christina, a major in allied health science, plans to use her student-athlete experience to guide her future career as a physical therapist.
How I balance academics and athletics
“Having a planner for every week helps a lot! I spend about three hours a day in the evenings practicing and working out with my team, so I’ve learned to manage my time carefully. Staying disciplined is key, and there are definitely days when I’m tired, but I remind myself of my goals in both school and track. My athletic schedule actually helps me stay focused and organized because I know I don’t have time to procrastinate.”
The support that helps me succeed
“My coaches and professors at Carthage have played a huge role in my success. My coaches push me to be better every day, but they also understand when I need to focus on recovery or academics. They listen, check in on me, and have helped me grow as an athlete. My professors are just as supportive; they’re flexible when I have meets and are always willing to meet outside of class if I need help. Knowing I have people in my corner who care about my performance and well-being makes a big difference.”
My biggest accomplishment at Carthage
“As an athlete, my biggest accomplishment at Carthage has been becoming an All-Conference long jumper and improving my personal record from 12 feet in high school to over 18 feet in college. I started track late and had to work extremely hard to catch up physically and mentally. It wasn’t easy balancing academics and training, but I stayed consistent and pushed through. That growth didn’t just happen on the runway but through every lift, sprint, and recovery session.”
My favorite athletic facility
“My favorite athletic facility at Carthage is the Tarble Athletic and Recreation Center. It feels like a second home to me because I spend most of my evenings there. Whether I’m on the indoor track, lifting in the weight room, or just connecting with teammates before practice — it’s where I’ve grown the most as an athlete. It’s more than just a facility; it’s a place that holds a lot of memories, challenges, and personal growth.”
My career goal
“My career goal is to become a sports physical therapist. As a student-athlete, I’ve experienced the demands of training, competing, and recovering firsthand. I’ve seen how crucial proper rehab and injury prevention are to staying healthy and performing well. Balancing track and academics has taught me discipline, time management, and resilience skills essential in healthcare. Being a student-athlete has given me a unique perspective I’ll carry with me as I support others through their physical and mental recovery journeys.”
Advice for other student-athletes
“College-level competition isn’t just about getting personal records or winning every game — it’s about showing up every day with purpose. Your mindset matters just as much as your performance. Growth doesn’t always come fast, but it comes when you stay patient and passionate. Be ready to work hard and be proud of yourself. Recovery is not optional — it’s essential. Sleep, proper nutrition, mobility work, and listening to your body are as important as your workouts. You can’t perform at your best if you constantly push through fatigue or pain. So take care of your body!”
