History
Samantha Bocock ’27 discovered her love for historical places while traveling with her family as a child — a passion that ultimately led her to pursue a history major at Carthage. Since arriving on campus, she has embraced every opportunity to expand her knowledge, including a J-Term trip to England and France focused on the history of World War II. Looking ahead, Samantha hopes to turn her enthusiasm for the past into a career by opening a historical tour guide center in her hometown of South Haven, Michigan. “South Haven is full of history, and it’s a large tourist destination in Michigan,” she says. “I’d like to share the beauties of my hometown with others.”
Outside the classroom, Samantha enjoys exploring Kenosha with her friends, often visiting local spots like Alpaca Art, antique shops, and thrift stores. “Kenosha reminds me a lot of home,” she shares, “so it’s nice to be in a somewhat familiar environment.”
What students love about Kenosha
Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because I really loved the golf program, and my sister went here. So, it was nice to be near my family while at a school far away from home.”
Favorite class
“I took a J-Term course on Cleopatra and Hypatia during my freshman year. I really loved that course because it was full of information about prominent female figures in history. I made a lot of friends in that class who I will never forget.”
Toughest class
“I had a hard time in my Statistics class, but I had friends help me throughout the semester. I’m not the greatest at math, but it was interesting to learn how mathematicians think.”
Campus involvement
“I am part of the Carthage women’s golf team. My teammates are my rock, and I’m not sure what I would do without their support and constant need to make everyone around them smile. My coaches are incredible and get to know each individual player.”
Favorite spot on campus
Favorite memory
“My favorite Carthage memory is the bus ride back after winning a big tournament. We were all super excited and played ‘We Are the Champions’ by Queen over the radio while singing and dancing.”
Best study tip
“Don’t leave all of the studying for the night before. Try chewing a piece of gum while studying, and then the same flavor during the rest of the exam to help you remember what you studied.”
Best tip for making friends
“Put yourself out there, join clubs, and talk to people in class. Everybody was new here at one point, and trying to talk to new people never hurts.”
Biggest surprise
“My biggest surprise was how much I changed and grew as a person after my first year. College is different from high school, and you should try to learn new things during your time here.”
What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?
“My 8-year-old self would think I was crazy. Growing up, I have always wanted to be a veterinarian. However, whenever my family traveled, we always stopped at a historical place. I always loved learning about the past and seeing everything first hand instead of in a big textbook with many words.”
