Nursing

Majoring in nursing, Rhiannon Montalbo ’26 had the amazing opportunity to travel to Norway and Sweden during J-Term to explore how their healthcare compares to that of the United States. This trip gave Rhiannon pivotal insight into her future career as a nurse and offered a culturally enriching journey. “It was such an amazing experience, and I learned so much about the different healthcare systems.”

Outside of her academic and global learning experiences, Rhiannon also appreciates the local community surrounding Carthage. “Kenosha has so many amazing places to go to over the weekend and hang out with friends. There are even little cafes like Summer Moon where you can study.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of how close the community is. You can really tell how much the faculty care about every student and how they want students to succeed. The nursing program is also amazing — with the direct-entry program and incredible professors.”

Faculty mentors

“The Carthage faculty have significantly helped me succeed — not just academically but also in my personal life. I love just going to their office, talking with them, and updating them on how I am doing. They are so kind and truly want the best for me. They are my biggest cheerleaders and always lift me up. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class so far has been Obstetrics. Going into nursing school, I knew I was interested in Obstetrics, so I looked forward to finally taking the class in my junior year. The professor was passionate about the class and told us personal stories about some unique births.”

Toughest class

“The toughest class I have taken was Mental Health. I did not expect to have such a hard time, but I did really well by the end of the class. The professor prepared me for the NCLEX by constantly testing us using NCLEX-style questions. Even though it was the toughest class, I definitely learned a lot.”

Campus involvement

“I am involved in cheer! We have practice three times a week and then football games on the weekends. We also cheer for men’s and women’s basketball! I love the team because of how close we are, and I know they all have my back. We always have so much fun at practices and games.”

Unique opportunities

“I had the honor of going on a J-Term study abroad trip to Norway and Sweden. It was so interesting to see how their healthcare systems are set up around free healthcare, compared to the insurance-based system used by the United States. I not only learned about the healthcare systems, but also the cultural differences.”

Career goal

“My career goal is to be the best, most caring nurse I possibly can be. I want to gain patients’ trust and help them get better as soon as possible. I also want to be able to give the best care to patients and their families. It is so important to be as caring as possible to these patients during such a vulnerable time in their lives.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is definitely The Oaks dorm lounges. There is such an amazing view of the lake, and I spend most of my time there doing homework and hanging out with my friends.”

Best tip for making friends

“The best way to make friends is by joining clubs or sports. I have also made many friends through my classes or by having the same major. It can be nice to have friends in the same major because we can ask each other questions.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self would not believe I moved so far away from home and that she is almost done with nursing school! She would be so proud and excited about where I am headed!”
