Liam Karth ’27, music education major with a concentration in vocal music education, has been actively involved in the performing arts for most of his life. However, it wasn’t until coming to Carthage that he was exposed to different perspectives in the arts and the vast opportunities in the field. He enjoys learning about directing, choreography, costume design, and lights and sound, in addition to improving his performance skills. Liam praises his professors for their continual support: “I love that the directors push their students but are still there along the way to help if you have any questions.”
Liam has expanded his involvement in the arts at Carthage as a member of the dance team, president of the National Dance Education Organization, singer in the choir, and a performer and choreographer for the College’s musicals and dance concerts. On top of that, he balances two on-campus jobs — one as a student ambassador through Admissions and another as the head house manager through the Office of Visual and Performing Arts.

Why Carthage?
“What more could I ask for? I am in an extremely comprehensive and hands-on education program that is eight semesters and not nine, the small class sizes allow me to know my professors, and the College is between Chicago and Milwaukee for networking and employment opportunities. I have it all!”
Favorite class
“My favorite class was Intro to Music Education because I learned a lot of life lessons and education philosophies to bring into my classroom and help me grow as a person. Taking that class in my first semester helped me be set up for success for the rest of my time at school!”
Toughest class
“My toughest class so far has been Choral Literature. It was a fast-paced class, and we covered the history of choral ensemble music from the Medieval era to the present day in a semester. It was a lot of knowledge, but it got easier the further along in the semester because it built on prior knowledge. I did enjoy it because it pushed me to learn more and understand more topics!”
Unique opportunities
“Since coming to Carthage, I have had countless opportunities to market and network during trips and events through my academic departments. I have gone to the Wisconsin Dance Council, went with the Theatre Department to the Illinois High School Theatre Festival, and have been able to work as a professional dancer through connections I’ve made at Carthage.”
Internships or campus employment
“I am a head house manager for the Office of Visual and Performing Arts. I help guests during live performance events, ensuring everyone is doing okay. I also help instruct ushers in the theatre, and I now oversee the scheduling and leadership side of the team. It has been super helpful as I prepare to go into education — it helps me reinforce my communication skills, problem-solving, and quick thinking! I’m also a student ambassador for the Office of Admissions. I love what I do and that I am able to do it all at Carthage!”
Best study tip
“Do some reading before your lectures so you can follow along and understand everything during the actual class. Do an active recall for five minutes after each class to solidify information you just learned. Then you won’t have to cram before exams. Also, utilize study groups with your friends and quiz each other!”
Advice for other students in your major?
“Take advantage of any opportunity you see. Try something new; you never know what will happen if you do not take the risk. And never be afraid to ask any questions — the worst that someone can say is no.”
