Beyond academics, Carla has fully immersed herself in the Carthage community — helping other students in her on-campus jobs, getting involved in campus life, and making friends along the way. “Carthage cares about its students. There are so many amazing faculty members who go above and beyond to ensure the well-being of their students.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of the community. Carthage offers small class sizes, fostering a sense of community within each class and creating a sense of belonging among students.”

Faculty mentors

“The Carthage faculty have had a great impact on my education. They go above and beyond in their fields and teach students lessons that help us throughout our college journey and life. My relationships with faculty members has allowed me to gather the courage to continue in my major and change my previous minor into a double major. Professors Stephanie Mitchell and Robin Holmes have been very supportive of my education and care about my grades and mental and physical well-being.”

Favorite class

“My favorite classes at Carthage have been Art Surveys I and II, and Modern Caribbean History. These classes taught me important lessons in my majors and allowed me to think more in-depth about past and current events. Art Surveys I and II allowed me to critically analyze artwork from any period and understand its historical context. Modern Caribbean History has allowed me to understand better the historical events and significance of how the Caribbean is represented today.”

Campus involvement

“I am involved in various clubs and honors societies here at Carthage. I am the vice president of Kappa Pi, the historian for Catholics at Carthage, and the social events coordinator for Phi Alpha Theta.”

Internships or campus employment

“I work at the circulation desk for the Hedberg Library, and I am a mentor for the Brainard Writing Center. I help my peers locate books within the library and develop their writing skills. Working both positions has allowed me to become more involved in the Carthage community.”

Career goal

“My career goal is to work in the restoration of historical artifacts and artwork, preserving the heritage and legacy that have inspired so many. It’s a dream of mine to work for a museum or the United States government in this field, as I have a deep love for history. The preservation of history as a whole is crucial to our society and our future.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot at campus is between the bookshelves of the library. I enjoy grabbing a drink from Starbucks and sitting within the shelves to study. It’s quiet and cozy compared to the upper level of the library, which can be more of a communicative environment.”

Favorite memory

“Some of my favorite Carthage memories include being hired at the Writing Center and meeting my friends in my classes. I met two friends in an Intellectual Foundations course and two others in Modern Caribbean History. Meeting my friends has been a great privilege and has allowed me to develop my personality.”

Best study tip

“Make sure you don’t leave anything until the last minute. Cramming may seem like a good idea, but it can also make it more difficult to get the right information and be successful on assignments and exams. I recommend taking notes throughout the lecture and taking additional notes on the slides or readings. Making two notebooks, one for the lecture and another for the textbook, can help make studying more efficient. Once you have the two notebooks, making a third ‘mega notebook’ can help with memorization and recall by writing down key points and ideas from both previous notebooks. Use calming techniques such as ‘5 senses’ and other mindfulness practices when in doubt.”

Best tip for making friends

“The best way to make friends at Carthage is to be open and friendly! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and take the first step in saying ‘hello!’ or even complimenting someone to help get the conversation going. Start by sitting next to someone in class and continue from there.”
