For Jia Anderson ’27, Carthage checked every box when she was looking for her dream college, giving her the tools to succeed in her graphic design major and business administration minor. Outside of classes, she is gaining valuable insight in her field as an on-campus student intern. “Working for The Aspire Program has taught me real-life experiences, such as networking and connecting with others, and I get to see my hard work pay off.”
Jia received support for her academic journey through multiple grants and the Susan Pietrowski Memorial Scholarship, which are helping open doors to new opportunities. “Receiving this scholarship has made my college life more enjoyable and allowed me to do things I did not think I would be able to do, such as study abroad.”

Why Carthage?
“The distance, view, and size are why I chose Carthage. The College being so close to the Illinois border makes it easy for me to go home when I need to, but it’s also far enough that I can experience college life. The size of campus allows me to make one-on-one connections with the professors. Obviously, the view of beautiful Lake Michigan makes it 10 times better.”
Faculty mentors
“The professors have made Carthage more enjoyable. Without them, I would not be as successful in school, finding internships, and experiencing things I never imagined possible. They’ve made me believe in myself and grow more confident. For that, I am forever grateful to them.”
Unique opportunities
“I am going to study abroad in Costa Rica for the 2026 J-Term study tour for photography. This will help me expand upon my knowledge, and it will be my first time out of the states. I am hoping to grow more appreciation for different cultures, experiences, and traditions.”
Internships or campus employment
“I have two internships for The Aspire Program. I am a graphic design and external relations intern. Working with Aspire has helped me network and prepare me for the real world. I am so happy that I get to do an internship related to my major and minor while getting paid and receiving college credit. I don’t know what other place offers such unique benefits for college students.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot is either Starbucks or The Tower because they are both great places to do homework or socialize!”
Favorite memory
“Going to downtown Kenosha with friends is my favorite memory. They have amazing food places and shops, and the harbor has a picture-perfect view of the lake!”
Best study tip
“Do not be scared to ask for help! Professors always want to work with you to help you succeed.”
Best tip for making friends
“Talk to people who are in the same major because the chances of you seeing them year after year are high. Having at least one friend in your major is nice as you have something to bond over, can do homework together, and see each other a lot.”
Advice for other students in your major?
“My advice is to ask others who are in your major what they do and how they get there. Also share portfolios. Portfolios highlight you and your hard work, so never be scared to ask others to review it.”
