Anna Brown ’27 is thankful to Carthage for helping her find the right path in college. Originally arriving as a communication major with minors in education and meteorology, Anna discovered a new passion with the support of The Aspire Program staff. Their guidance inspired her change one of her minros to public relations — an experience that strengthened her confidence and solidified her dream of working in a newsroom. “Talking with my Aspire career specialist was the best decision. Because of them, I was comfortable enough to make the career change and was able to kick-start my fresh ideas!”
Anna’s ambitions are supported by the Carthage Founders Scholarship — something that has been invaluable to her as a first-generation college student. “Receiving this scholarship helped me focus more on other important aspects of starting college, without getting caught up in the financial stress.”
Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because it is one of the few schools near me that offered meteorology (climate science). And when I toured the campus, it felt like home! I really loved its small campus size, convenient location, and The Aspire Program, and four-year graduation guarantee. I loved the idea that I could get plugged into campus easily and that I could have close relationships with the faculty.”
Faculty mentors
“The faculty here are what make Carthage, Carthage. Because of my relationships with the professors, I have gotten more opportunities within my studies and even in my career. I feel so seen by my professors. They are always available for questions and advice, in and out of the classroom. Professors Matthew Zorn, Lynn Brownson, and Jon Bruning are some of my favorite and best teachers!”
Favorite class
“Education and Society with Professor Jacqueline Witter-Easley has been one of my top-ranked classes thus far. She is an amazing, kind, and genuine professor. I had the best peers in that class, and we all became really close; it was like one big family. We even took field trips together! I formed unbreakable bonds with them — all while learning useful and exciting content that we can use later on in our lives/careers.”
Campus involvement
“Overall, I am very involved here on campus! I am a rookie in baton and flag for the Carthage spirit team, as well as a member of the Book Club and InterVarsity Christian Fellowship. I am the vice president of Habitat for Humanity; I am so passionate about this club and what we stand for. I love helping out in the community and being able to make a difference with a team that knows how to get things done while having fun! I also serve as the Student Government organization representative for Habitat for Humanity. Student Government has been so much fun, and I love being a part of their group and the awareness that we bring to the Carthage community.”
“Additionally, I am the president of the Carthage Plant Club. This club has taught me how to advocate for myself and others and how to become a better leader. I love plants, so this was the perfect club for me! With my public relations background, I was able to help grow this club to reach more of the student body, and we have held some really interesting and unique events! When I became president of the Diamond Painting Club, many students didn’t know it existed. But in collaborating on events with the Plant Club, we got a lot more enrollment. We diamond paint anything and everything — from canvases, to keychains, and even stickers. I’m excited to see what the future holds for this club!”
Internships or campus employment
“I am a student ambassador here at Carthage. I love it! This has helped me become more proficient in public speaking and talking to others, which closely aligns with public relations and communication. I love people, so this job is just the perfect fit for me. I look forward to giving tours every week!”
Career goal
“My plan is to be in the newsroom. My main goal was to be a broadcast meteorologist, but after I discovered public relations, my goal has changed a bit. Whether I am a news anchor, sports anchor, or a broadcast meteorologist, I look forward to the future and am excited to see what fits best for me.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spots are the study/conference rooms in the David A. Straz Jr. Center! I love the all-glass windows, which allows me to get a wonderful view of the lake and huge amounts of natural light. There’s plenty of room for my friends and I to study and have all our things out in front of us. On a big study day, we stay there for hours and help keep each other productive and get work done.”
Favorite memory
“The first snowfall at Carthage is always magical! My friends and I always go out and play in it. It has created wonderful memories, and it’s so much fun! Something about being a kid again in the snow is such a great and stress-free feeling. Another one of my favorite Carthage moments is going to the Milwaukee Admirals games with the Carthage Activities Board! We get some of the best seats in the house, and the games are amazing and action-packed. It’s something I look forward to each year!”
Best study tip
“Everyone studies differently. Some can’t study alone and only in groups, and vice versa. For me personally, I can get so much work done when I’m with friends. We help each other stay accountable and focused instead of being a distraction.”
Best tip for making friends
“Getting involved has helped me place my roots here at Carthage, and it has bettered my connections, both on campus and in the Kenosha community. Another thing is to talk and get to know others in class. I met most of my closest friends through the classes I took and the people I sat next to. The bonds you make with others here at Carthage are unbreakable.”
