Faculty mentors
“I came into Carthage as a history and secondary education major, but my professors helped me find my passion in exercise and sport science. Professors Tony Pustina and Shelly Johnston have both profoundly impacted my life and academic journey at Carthage. Their expertise and passion for exercise and sport science ignited a deeper interest within me, pushing me to explore aspects of the field I hadn’t previously considered. They helped me find my calling. Their commitment to student success is evident in their willingness to go the extra mile by offering guidance and support beyond the classroom.”
Favorite class
“My favorite class at Carthage thus far has been Elementary Physical Education. During this course, we got the opportunity to do a seven-week program with homeschooled kids! It wasn’t just textbook learning; it was a real opportunity to connect with students on a one-on-one basis and gain hands-on experience. Forming lesson plans was incredibly rewarding, and seeing the kids respond to our activities and grow more confident each week was amazing. This experience solidified my passion for teaching and showed me the impact I can have as an educator.”
Campus involvement
“At Carthage, I play softball, am a student ambassador, and work as a peer tutor for the Human Anatomy and Physiology classes.”
Biggest surprise
“The exercise and sport science major has changed my life. Having small class sizes at Carthage, I’m able to create a sense of community in my classes. I wake up excited to go to class and that’s because of the professors and the community that we have built.”
