“I deeply value the bowling community, the guidance of coaches, and the exhilarating experience of stepping onto the approach to deliver a perfect pocket strike.”

Why I chose Carthage

“Carthage provided the academic programs I was seeking, both in my chosen major and minor. I was also drawn to the campus layout and the unparalleled view of Lake Michigan.”

What it means to be a Firebird

“To me, being a Firebird represents resilience. I consider myself a resilient individual who has faced various challenges and difficulties with determination. Each time, I’ve picked myself up and continued moving forward. I wear my Firebirds bowling jerseys with pride, knowing they symbolize this.”

My favorite team memory

“One of my favorite memories with my teammates was our trip to Michigan for the DIII National Bowling Invitational. The long journey from Kenosha to Lansing was filled with laughter and moments that still bring a smile. From the fun we had upon arriving at the hotel to the early morning excitement at the bowling alley, the entire experience was unforgettable. Whether on the lanes or off, we truly know how to enjoy ourselves. The way we all get along and understand one another is what made this memory so special to me.”

What makes the student-athlete community special

“It is very welcoming. Bowling is usually a forgotten sport, but Carthage does well in highlighting our achievements and sharing our successes with the Carthage community.”

How I balance academics and athletics

“I’ve learned to prioritize my time based on where I am and what needs my focus. During the week, I dedicate my daytime hours to academics, staying on top of my coursework. When I’m at the bowling alley for practice, my attention shifts entirely to the sport — whether it’s figuring out how to pick up a spare or making the right adjustment to hit the pocket. This focused mindset is what helps me avoid feeling overwhelmed. Of course, there are times when school and bowling overlap, and the pressure builds. I’ve learned the importance of staying present and focusing on what I can control. Worrying about an assignment won’t help me perform in practice, just as stressing over a bad game won’t help me with my coursework. Achieving balance isn’t easy, but it becomes possible when you learn how to prioritize your time effectively and stay grounded in the moment.”

The support that helps me succeed

“My coach supports me both on and off the lane. Coach Dale Lehman always asks how my grades are, sets up meetings to check in, and of course, coaches. My professors support me by understanding when I have to leave early for a tournament or need an extension on an assignment. They know the importance of flexibility between academics and sports for student-athletes.”

My biggest accomplishment at Carthage

“I’m proud of the foundation I’ve built so far — maintaining a strong GPA in my major, successfully completing all of my courses, actively participating in campus events, and becoming an engaged member of the Carthage community are accomplishments I value. These experiences have helped me establish a solid start, both academically and socially.”

How I'm involved beyond athletics

“I am involved in the Mental Health Awareness Club on campus, which promotes mental health awareness and provides a supportive community for students.”

My career goal

“My career goal is to become a therapist and eventually open a private practice. I’m deeply passionate about mental health and committed to making a positive impact in the lives of others. Being a student-athlete has played a significant role in preparing me for this path. It has taught me valuable skills such as perseverance, time management, the ability to accept and apply constructive feedback, and the importance of teamwork, all of which are essential qualities for a successful therapist and business owner.”

Advice for other student-athletes

“My advice to students considering college athletics is to choose a school based on your academic and career goals, not just the sport. Athletic programs can change and rosters can shift, but your education and overall college experience should remain your top priority. If you don’t genuinely enjoy the campus or feel a connection with the school community, it will be difficult to thrive. Once you feel at home, participating in your sport becomes a bonus. Additionally, strong time management skills are essential. Balancing academics, athletics, and personal life can be challenging, especially during your freshman year. Learning to prioritize your responsibilities will help you for long-term success.”
