Water Polo
Though Breanna Carstens ’26 started as a swimmer, she discovered water polo her freshman year of high school and never looked back. She now plays as an attacker for the Carthage women’s water polo team. A dedicated nursing major, Breanna values the opportunity to travel with her team, build strong bonds within a supportive community, and experience the shared pride that comes from working together toward common goals.
Why I chose Carthage
“I loved the nursing program and meeting the water polo team. Plus, I liked the lake views and the close community. It just checked off all my boxes.”
What it means to be a Firebird
“Being a Firebird is something that I take pride in and is something that I work for. It is such a rewarding experience.”
My favorite team memory
“I absolutely love traveling! One trip I will always remember is going to Dallas, Texas with my team freshman year for spring break.”
What makes the student-athlete community special
“It is such a tight-knit community since a huge percentage of our campus is student-athletes.”
How I balance academics and athletics
“Time management plays a huge role in how I balance academics and athletics. I plan homework and study time each day! It also helps to create study groups with my teammates.”
The support that helps me succeed
“My coach is super supportive. He gives us tons of resources about time management and burnout, and works with us through any academic issues. My professors are also very understanding and always willing to work with me. Carthage provides tons of resources for students to use, including mental health resources, access to athletic training, and a nutritionist!”
My biggest accomplishment at Carthage
“The White Coat Ceremony for nursing has been my biggest accomplishment so far!”
My favorite athletic facility
“The HARIBO Pool has to be my favorite, as it’s where I spend most of my time.”
My career goal
“I want to be a registered nurse after graduation. Being on the water polo team has helped me strengthen many of my skills, such as time management, teamwork, and grit!”
Advice for other student-athletes
“Don’t be afraid to reach out. Being on a college-level team is such an amazing experience.”
