Water Polo

Yamila Areizaga ’27, a nursing major, discovered water polo through a park district program when she was younger. While she played on a co-ed team then, she now plays for the Carthage women’s water polo team as an attacker. Being a student-athlete has provided Yamila with a new level of support. Whether it comes from the other student-athletes, her coaches, or the many resources Carthage offers, Yamila is grateful for the strong bonds and the giant support bubble that comes with being an athlete at Carthage.

“Being a Firebird gives me a purpose. I find a sense of unity in sharing that identity with others, and I am blessed to be a part of such a supportive community.”

Why I chose Carthage

“Initially, I chose Carthage because of the natural beauty that surrounds the campus. It’s striking. Carthage truly checked all of my boxes: I got accepted into the nursing program, was recruited to play the sport I love, and I wasn’t far from the only place I knew as home.”

What it means to be a Firebird

“Being a Firebird gives me a purpose. I find a sense of unity in sharing that identity with others, and I am blessed to be a part of such a supportive community. Being a Firebird is being empowered; it’s a privilege.”

My favorite team memory

“My favorite team memory is from when our team was in California. We were on our way to dinner after winning a game, blasting songs, when suddenly our coach decided he would show us all up with his (surprisingly) amazing vocals.”

What makes the student-athlete community special

“The majority of our campus is made up of student-athletes. That said, all the athletes collectively share the same respect for one another. Every single sports team is involved in supporting other teams. It leaves so much room to build stronger bonds and connect with those around you. I would compare it to having one giant support bubble.”

How I balance academics and athletics

“Time management is the name of the game when it comes to being a balanced student-athlete. At times, that means missing out on a day of fun or extra social time with your friends.”

The support that helps me succeed

“My coach offers everything and more to ensure I succeed in and out of the pool. As for my professors, they work to develop plans, so I can be successful in their classes despite having to miss class. The faculty understand that, just like them, we too have a life outside the classroom. Carthage also offers a plethora of support for my fellow student-athletes and me — from the Health and Counseling Center to The N.E.S.T. to the extra protein sources we’re given.”

My biggest accomplishment at Carthage

“My genuine response to this question would be my growth. Carthage has taught me how to adapt and become a better version of myself. I think it’s important to recognize that I wouldn’t be who I am today if I hadn’t faced the things I have in my years being here.”

My favorite athletic facility

“I like the Marconi Weight Room since I have access to some machines that the other gyms don’t have.”

My career goal

“My biggest goal when I’m a nurse is to touch a person’s heart in their deepest time of need and help someone find their dignity in moments when they have none at all. Being a student-athlete has helped me embrace humility and resilience. Both will be key factors in my success in the workplace.”

Advice for other student-athletes

“Do it because you love it. Don’t let that little voice inside your head tell you that you aren’t good enough. Anything is possible through hard work and dedication.”
