After Payton Lange ’26 suffered a spinal cord injury in high school, her career dreams shifted from figure skating to the healthcare field. Motivated by the care and commitment she witnessed firsthand from medical professionals, Payton decided to become an occupational therapist. “I experienced a tragedy, but thanks to my healthcare team, I found a passion through it,” she says.

As an allied health science major at Carthage, Payton has found a strong sense of belonging and encouragement within the College community. She was honored with the Aurora Advocate for Healthcare Scholarship, awarded to a student who embodies dedication, patient advocacy, and perseverance. She also benefits from the guidance of Allied Health Science Department faculty and her career specialist in The Aspire Program, who are helping her navigate the graduate school application process and find internships. Reflecting on her experience, Payton shares: “The Aspire Program gave me my opportunity to go to numerous career fairs, gave me my first healthcare internship at Froedtert South, and assisted me with the entire graduate school application process.” With these resources and experiences, Payton is moving forward with confidence in her future.

“I feel very prepared to go into graduate school and my future career after attending all of the events, classes, and opportunities Carthage has to offer.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of the small class sizes and the tight-knit community. Although I’m a commuter, this has allowed me to become immensely involved in campus life and build many amazing connections with my peers and professors. I also love the lake view! You can’t beat that.”

Faculty mentors

“I have built so many connections with faculty in a multitude of departments. The Allied Health Science Department has brought in many opportunities for students within the major; such as Jump-Start events, Clinical Immersion J-Term courses, and a mentorship program.”

Favorite class

“My favorite classes at Carthage so far would be Kinesiology, and Human Anatomy and Physiology for the Health Professional. These classes enhanced my passion for the biomechanics, pathology, and physiological processes of the body and solidified my career choice in rehabilitation services.”

Toughest class

“My toughest class at Carthage was Physics. I have never seen myself as a math person, but this class challenged that thought and helped me realize that — with time and dedication — I can do well in any class. This class also helped me realize that booking peer tutor appointments doesn’t mean that I’m behind; rather, it means that I am dedicated to the learning process.”

Campus involvement

“I am heavily involved with Carthage clubs. I am a member of Zeta Tau Sigma, which has allowed me to build irreplaceable bonds, gain volunteer hours, and make memories that will last me a lifetime. I am also an active member of the Pre-Health Club and now serve as the e-board secretary. I also assist the Allied Health Science Department as a department fellow, member of our pre-professional fraternity’s e-board, and mentor in the mentorship program.”

Unique opportunities

“During J-Term, I received the opportunity to do clinical immersion at Aurora Medical Center through one of our allied health science classes. I assisted with treatment, charting, and observing inpatient and outpatient sessions. Our class made AMA poster presentations based on different case studies, and we had the opportunity to present them at the Celebration of Scholars.”

Internships or campus employment

“I have an internship at Froedtert South in their Rehabilitation Department. I discovered this position at a career fair, and I have gained so much knowledge about all different aspects of rehabilitation, such as inpatient, outpatient, pain management, sports medicine, and cardiac rehab. I also work for the Biology Department on campus as a peer tutor and lab assistant, so I’ve had the opportunity to teach other students about valuable information.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is the library and Starbucks. Both locations are my main study spots, and I always see so many friends in these locations no matter what time I go.”

Best study tip

“Do not procrastinate! Start almost immediately after you learn the content, but go slow and steady as the exam approaches. Studying progressively for two weeks is better than panicking for three days. Over-learning is key!”

Best tip for making friends

“Getting involved in clubs, organizations, and other campus activities is the best way to make friends. During the first part of my freshman year, I would go to classes and then go home, but now, you’ll see me on campus pretty much all day when I don’t work at my off-campus job.”
