Major(s)
Musical Theatre, Directing
A musical theatre and directing major, Annaliese Ruhs ’26 is thoroughly involved in the theatre and music community at Carthage as a box office attendant, house manager, scene shop technician, a singer, and performer. She loves the opportunity to bond with fellow students and castmates through the welcoming culture on campus. “We spend so much time with each other, and they give us opportunities to connect and bond as a group,” she says. By being treated like a young professional by the faculty and learning how to interview and book roles, Annaliese feels prepared to take on auditions for future jobs.
In Kenosha, Annaliese enjoys connecting with the local community and spending time downtown on the weekends — exploring the restaurants, shops, events, and the Harbor Market in the spring.
Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because of the Music Department. The way the faculty and staff treated me on my visit was so welcoming and warm that it felt like a place where I could succeed.”
Faculty mentors
“Professor Maggie Burk is an incredibly intelligent person, and the care that she gives her classes and her students is unmatched by any other professor. She cares about my success as a student and person. She encourages me to be the best version of myself while pushing me academically.”
Campus involvement
“I am involved in the Carthage Choir and Lincoln Chamber Singers. These ensembles not only work on music, but also teamwork and collaboration. Choir has given me the opportunity to connect with other people who I never would have before. ”
Unique opportunities
“I traveled to the UK with the Carthage Choir. We went to London, Bath, Rugby, Stonehenge, Stratford-upon-Avon, and Edinburgh. Thanks to Carthage, I received scholarships that allowed me to go on this trip, which was my first time ever traveling internationally. We met amazing people, ate even better food, and saw some of the most beautiful sites and architecture.”
Internships or campus employment
“I work as a box office attendant, house manager, and a scene shop technician. These jobs have given me front- and back-of-house experience in the theatre on top of being able to perform. I can interact with patrons who will later see me perform on stage on a set I built. It’s truly a well-rounded experience.”
Favorite spot on campus
“In the basement of the library, there are huge windows where you can see the sunset in the evening. This is my favorite spot to study and get work done because it’s so peaceful and quiet.”
Best study tip
“Block out an hour or two a day to find a quiet spot where you can put your phone away and focus on your homework. Go to your favorite study spot like it’s a class that you can’t miss.”
Best tip for making friends
“Getting involved sounds corny, but it’s so incredibly true. By joining clubs and extracurriculars, you meet people outside of your major whom you can form the strongest bonds with.”
