At Carthage, Idarius has found his place through friends, faculty, and coaches, who all give him the support to succeed. “I’m living up to my dreams as a collegiate athlete,” he says, “and looking forward to making an impact on the future generation.”

Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because it’s not too far from home and it provided me the opportunity to play football at the collegiate level.”
Faculty mentors
“Carthage gave me a lot of support through the Exercise and Sport Science and Education Departments, making sure I’m fit and ready to be an educator. They keep me on track and provide me with plenty of opportunities in and outside of school to make an impact and to become a better person overall. All my professors are all welcoming to me and fun to be around.”
Favorite class
“My favorite class was Elementary Physical Education because it was the first time I got the chance to apply my knowledge from classes to real situations. I found my strengths and weaknesses, and discovered ways to improve my teaching style. This class gave me more hope and reassurance that I’m fit to be a future educator.”
Toughest class
“The toughest class that I have taken so far was Human Anatomy because of how intense the exams were and how much studying you have to do to understand how the body reacts the way it does.”
Campus involvement
“I am a part of Carthage Bound, the Black Student Union, and the football team. I found many great people and friends through football, and I can call them family. Carthage Bound and the Black Student Union have given me many opportunities to impact the youth and become a better version of myself every day.”
Unique opportunities
“I had the opportunity to talk to the youth about the Education Department and why I chose to become an educator. I explained how the Education Department gives you a lot of experiences to observe and take control of a class, along with reflecting on how you can improve yourself for future courses.”
Career goal
“My career goal is to become a physical education teacher and coach at the high school level after achieving my bachelor’s degree. I also want to obtain my master’s degree in teaching administration so that I can become an athletic director in the long run.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot to go to on campus is the library. You can work individually or within a group in the various study rooms. Also, Starbucks is inside for some good coffee.”
Favorite memory
“My favorite memory at Carthage is getting my first win in football as a starter against Elmhurst during Homecoming. It was the first time my family saw me play at the collegiate level and win.”
Best study tip
“Get a calendar board and write down when assignments are due so you know what’s coming up. Also, get along with people in the same major as you so you can have a partner who has taken similar classes and help each other.”
