“One of my biggest accomplishments at Carthage has to be creating strong, everlasting friendships with my teammates.”

Frank Abreu, ’26

Why I chose Carthage

“I chose Carthage because of the great location, with campus being right on the lake. It reminded me of home, which has helped when I get homesick. The opportunities I was told about with the many Fortune 500 companies in the area sounded promising, especially since I was interested in pursuing a career in a business profession.”

What it means to be a Firebird

“Being a Firebird means being a friend to those who need one, helping wherever you can, and rising to any challenge that is in your way, whether it’s on the field, court, classroom, or in life.”

My favorite team memory

“So far, my favorite memory is beating North Park and celebrating the win with the boys in the locker room after.”

What makes the student-athlete community special

“The student-athlete community here is very nice and supportive on game days. It’s always a blast going to other team’s games to support them too.”

How I balance academics and athletics

“It’s definitely not easy, but the way to do it is by having discipline for assignments, getting them done sooner rather than later, so that you’re able to make time for other matters in your schedule.”

The support that helps me succeed

“My coaches are one of the biggest support systems I have on campus. They are always holding me accountable with grade checks and notifying me when there are opportunities for tutoring. The professors are very kind and understanding as well. They will always let me know their office hours and encourage me to send them emails if I have questions about anything.”

My favorite athletic facility

“My favorite athletic facility would have to be the Marconi Weight Room because the best way to relieve stress, especially around finals time, is by tossing some heavy circles around.”

How I'm involved beyond athletics

“I am involved with Carthage Bound, a five-day pre-orientation hosted by faculty and student volunteers for incoming male student-athletes. I am involved with many organizations like the Boys and Girls Club and the Wisconsin Marathon; we do a lot of volunteer work through the football team for these organizations.”

My career goal

“I want to pursue a career as a first responder, whether that be a police officer or a firefighter. My student-athlete experience will help me tremendously in this career because of the skills I have had to develop over the many years of playing, like time management, working within a team, and dedicating myself to working hard toward a common goal.”

Advice for other student-athletes

“Understand that, no matter where you go, you are blessed to be in the position you are in. Only so many people have the opportunity to compete at the collegiate level no matter what division, so take full advantage of it and enjoy it!”
