Isabel Gonzalez ’26, a neuroscience major with a concentration in pre-optometry, is a dedicated member of the Carthage women’s bowling team. Her passion for bowling began in third grade, inspired by her older brother’s involvement in the sport. Looking ahead, Isabel plans to become an optometrist. She credits her experience as a student-athlete with helping her develop strong planning abilities and the discipline to effectively balance multiple responsibilities — qualities she believes will be invaluable when caring for patients in her future career.

“Being a student-athlete has helped me become organized and improve my time management skills greatly.”

Why I chose Carthage

“I chose Carthage because it was a perfect distance from home. I have the option of going home or staying on campus for the weekend. I liked the small class sizes and having a relationship with my professors. Carthage also had my intended concentration, pre-optometry, and a bowling team!”

My favorite team memory

“Every time we have a tournament in the quad cities, we get ice cream at Whitey’s Ice Cream!”

How I balance academics and athletics

“Making sure I allow myself to have enough time to complete my school work is very important. I use a calendar and to-do list, so I don’t miss any assignments. I can also do my homework when we have tournaments, which helps a lot.”

The support that helps me succeed

“My coach tries to provide enough time when we travel for tournaments to get our homework done. My professors are very flexible when I have to miss classes as well.”

How I'm involved beyond athletics

“I am a senior resident assistant in Denhart Hall. I am also the vice president of the Pre-Health Club and a member of Nu Rho Psi, a national neuroscience honor society.”
