After participating in a summer camp at Carthage when he was younger, the College stood out to Russell Smith ’26 when going on school tours, and he found that Carthage was the perfect fit for him. Now, as he works to complete his photography degree, Russell gives back by helping new students find their place at Carthage through the SMARTER Mentoring Program. “I love supporting other students and helping them feel at home,” he says.

One of his favorite parts of campus is its location along Lake Michigan. When he needs a break, Russell enjoys walking the shoreline on campus, collecting sea glass and unique rocks with his friends.

“The small class sizes, campus size, and location were what I was looking for.”

Why Carthage?

“After participating in a swimming summer camp in 2017, Carthage was the first place I looked into when researching schools. I took several college tours, but I knew after my first tour at Carthage that I would fit here best.”

Faculty mentors

“The faculty at Carthage have been nothing but supportive. I know I can go to several of the professors I have had in the past for advice, and they would all take time out of their day to support and help me out to the best of their ability. I would not have gotten where I am without the help of my professors.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class so far has been Darkroom Photography. The course challenged me to think creatively while working with a new form of photography I’ve never tried before. It helped me think differently about my process of taking photos, even digitally.”

Toughest class

“Environmental Pollutants was a really difficult class for me. I struggled to figure out what I wanted to major in, so during my freshman year of J-Term, I took the course because I was interested in environmental science. I did not think about how much chemistry I would have to do in the class because I am not good at chemistry. While it was very interesting, it was also challenging.”

Campus involvement

“I am a part of the Delta Upsilon fraternity on campus, where I am the vice president of risk management. I have pushed myself to try new things and meet people through Delta Upsilon. I am so proud to be a part of this fraternity and all the philanthropy and service we provide. I know that Greek Life can be intimidating, but here at Carthage, it is so welcoming and different from other schools.”

Favorite spot on campus

“The Campbell Student Union Auditorium is one of my favorite spots. It’s a quiet place with comfortable chairs where I love to do my homework.”

Best study tip

“Find a good location where you feel productive, and do your work there.”

Best tip for making friends

“Join lots of clubs and go to as many events as you can, especially during the first week of school.”
