A recipient of the Modern Language Scholarship, Owen Powers ’28 is fully immersed in his Japanese studies at Carthage. The scholarship has not only supported his academic success, but also affirmed his belief in his own potential. “This scholarship reminds me that I am capable of learning whatever I put my mind to and allows me to pursue something I am passionate about in a great environment,” he says.

For Owen, studying Japanese has been both intellectually rewarding and personally transformative. “Japanese broadens your horizons significantly,” he says. “You learn a completely new way of thinking and perspective on life.”

“I am a part of the Japanese Club and Intramural Volleyball Club. I met a lot of good friends from these clubs, and really enjoy participating in them!”

Favorite memory

“Some of my favorite moments and memories were with the international exchange students here at Carthage. I was able to meet some of my best friends from all over the world and explore Kenosha, Milwaukee, and Chicago for the first time with them.”

Best tip for making friends

“The best way to make friends is to put yourself out there, even if you really don’t want to. Sometimes, all you need is a little push to realize it isn’t so bad. You will find your people.”
