Katie Wilhelm ’27 had the amazing opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica, where she examined and took pictures of the region’s biodiversity — an experience that deepened her passion for biology. When she’s in Kenosha, Katie loves to visit the restaurants and coffee shops in town — Slip 56, Waterfront, and La Fogata being her favorites. Additionally, Katie loves to play a part in the community by attending the Kenosha Farmers Market in the fall.
Katie involves herself on campus by joining clubs, participating in the Neurophysiology Research Lab, and working as a biology lab assistant and tutor. Through her involvement and the opportunities given to her at Carthage, Katie has gained critical skills that will help her achieve her dream of attending medical school and becoming a doctor. “Being further involved in my major has helped me become more confident and dedicated.”

Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because of the small class sizes and opportunities to form relationships with my peers and professors.”
Faculty mentors
“The Carthage faculty have helped me make connections within the community and in the real world. Being able to form relationships with my professors helps me feel more comfortable asking questions, both about course content and for advice.”
Favorite class
“My favorite class so far has been General Chemistry II with Professor Christine Blaine. She is the best and never fails to make us laugh in class. I learned so much and enjoyed the content.”
Campus involvement
“I am the director of philanthropy for Chi Omega Social Sorority. I am also involved in multiple academic clubs and honor societies, such as the Pre-Health Club, Biology Club, Chemistry Club, Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society, Theta Chi Delta Chemistry Honor Society, and Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society.”
Internships or campus employment
“I work as both a biology lab assistant and a biology tutor on campus. Both jobs have helped me feel more connected to students and professors in my major department and act as a leader.”
Favorite memory
“Some of my favorite Carthage memories would be going to sporting events with my friends, going on walks along the lake in the fall and spring, and playing sand volleyball!”
Best study tip
“Reach out to professors as well as older students in your major! Being able to talk to upperclassmen biology and pre-medical students as a freshman was so helpful for me. Now, as an upperclassman, it’s so rewarding to help freshmen whose shoes I was just in.”
Best tip for making friends
“Join clubs and participate in activities even if you aren’t super into them! I met many of my friends by just showing up to random events and talking to people.”
Biggest surprise
“The biggest surprise for me so far has been noticing how much I’ve grown since starting college. I noticed how much I have changed and how confident I have become.”
Advice for other students in your major?
“I would advise students not to give up; biology is a hard major, and the classes will push you, but remember why you are doing it and keep reaching your goal.”
