“Everyone knows everyone! I always have another athlete in my class who I have connected with before.”

Why I chose Carthage

“I chose Carthage because it felt like the best fit. I knew I wanted smaller class sizes, so my professors could get to know me. I really liked the atmosphere and the layout of the campus. I loved the coaches and all the athletes that I met during my visits. I was really torn between Carthage and another similar school, but ended up here because it just felt right. People always told me I’d know when the right choice came along. They were right, and I definitely made the right decision.”

What it means to be a Firebird

“Being a Firebird means building a strong community. I have made so many great friends and had amazing teammates, professors, and coaches during my time here. It reminds me to always be kind, work hard, and uplift others. Having such a supportive community behind me makes it so much easier and rewarding. We are all in this together, no matter if things are going well or if we are struggling.”

My favorite team memory

“My favorite memory is when the women’s basketball team went to Puerto Rico in December 2024. We went 2-0 and had a crazy comeback in the first game. The whole trip was such a cool experience. I created so many lifelong memories. It was exciting to see a different part of the world and to do it with some of my close friends. I also love a good beach trip!”

What makes the student-athlete community special

“My academic department is filled with athletes, and everyone is super encouraging. Everyone knows everyone! I always have another athlete in my class who I have connected with before. Also, my professors are understanding when I have games or meets. They help me get caught up on material that I missed and are delighted to answer any questions I have. It makes life way less stressful when they allow me to be successful in both academics and athletics.”

How I balance academics and athletics

“Taking time to realize what my needs are has been huge for me. Sometimes I am in a homework mood and can get most of it done in one sitting. Other days, I am feeling unproductive and just lie in bed and take a nap. Being lenient with myself has helped me avoid the burnout from school. Being in sports also helps me take my mind off of academics, follow a routine, and move my body. It truly is all about balance between what I do and don’t want to do.”

The support that helps me succeed

“My coaches are always there for me. Coach Stephanie Domin always has her door wide open and is so receptive to listening to me talk about anything. That has been incredible for me when I am having a rough day or just want to go chitchat with her. She really is the best. My professors are also amazing. They make sure I know what I need to get done if I am missing class for athletics. They will answer questions I have about classwork and make sure I understand. They always wish me good luck and ask how games went!

“Carthage has so many tools and facilities that are available to student-athletes. The athletic trainers are fantastic and have the athletes’ best interest in mind. They do everything they can to get us back into our sports. The N.E.S.T. (nutrition, exercise, treatment, and science room) is also great for recovery. The boots in the room are lifesavers for my legs after a long run. The three weight rooms, the basketball court, and an indoor and outdoor track all help me get better every day.”

My biggest accomplishment at Carthage

“I think being able to maintain my academics and athletics is a big accomplishment. I have done three sports every year that I’ve been here and made the Dean’s List every semester. I never miss class or practice, and I am proud of that! The athletes in Division III are incredible and put so much effort into perfecting their sport. I am so lucky that I get the chance to compete against them every single day to better myself. And doing that while keeping up on my studies is a big accomplishment!”

My favorite athletic facility

“It has to be Tarble Arena. The atmosphere there is electric during games. I’ll never forget when we beat Illinois Wesleyan there. The stands were packed, and the crowd was going crazy. There is always a good showing for home events, and that makes it more fun.”

My career goal

“I want to be a physical and health education teacher. Being a student-athlete directly impacts this profession. It has taught me how to move my body and the importance of staying healthy throughout my lifetime. I also learned the importance of communication and building strong relationships with people. The ability to balance a busy schedule is another skill that will last forever. I know how to get stuff done when there are many things on my plate. Being a student-athlete prepared me for so many scenarios in my future and helps me know that I am equipped to handle them. I can take all of these lessons with me as I teach generations to come.”

Advice for other student-athletes

“Do it! Being in athletics helped me feel that I had a place in the early weeks of a brand new environment with all new people, housing, food, and literally everything. It is reassuring to see the friendly face of a teammate while walking down Campus Drive or eating at the cafeteria. I have made my best friends through my sports. Also, there are perks, like free gear and meals that make the whole thing more enticing! If I had to do it all over again, I’d commit to playing sports a million times over because of the joy they have brought me.”
