Why I chose Carthage
“I chose Carthage because of the educational opportunities presented here. The small class sizes intrigued me because I never wanted to be ‘just a number’ in my class. I wanted to get to know my professors and get help if needed. Each professor has field experience in the subject they are teaching, and they have major connections to the real world. The professors here are a wonderful resource on their own.”
What it means to be a Firebird
“Being a Firebird means putting your all into everything you do: athletics, academics, and other clubs and activities. It’s about committing to your commitments and setting an example for those who follow.”
My favorite team memory
“I enjoyed our spring break trip to Orlando, Florida. It was the first big trip we took as a team, and I made so many amazing memories — from the early morning travel days to the matches in the Florida sun to relaxing by the pool on our off days. The team became so much closer over this week, and it was a time that I will cherish forever.”
What makes the student-athlete community special
“All student-athletes recognize each other for all the hard work we are putting into our sports and our studies. We work day in and day out to keep bettering ourselves, and that speaks volumes. We are a tight-knit community, and we are there to support each other through it all.”
How I balance academics and athletics
“I use time management skills and put forth a lot of hard work to ensure that everything gets done. I make sure to communicate effectively with my professors because they want me to succeed inside and outside the classroom. Utilizing professors’ office hours when I have missed class because of a match has helped, and I highly recommend that so you can get caught up on what you missed from class.”
The support that helps me succeed
“Coaches and professors continue to push me in the classroom and on the court because they see my potential. My coaches always try to keep things as positive as possible to create a better mindset when we play. As for my professors, they cheer me on and stay up to date on how our matches are going and ask me follow-up questions in class about them, too. They also have been great by being flexible with my schedule for when I may have to miss class because of a match/tournament. Additionally, the recovery facilities on campus and access to athletic trainers are really helpful.”
My favorite athletic facility
“My favorite athletic facility on campus is the Marconi Weight Room. I love having team lifts at Marconi because we can blast music and work out with our teammates. The energy is contagious, and it is such a fun environment to push each other to keep going.”
How I'm involved beyond athletics
“I am involved in Chi Omega, which is Carthage’s largest sorority. I absolutely loved the entire process of rushing and getting to know the girls. We have fun social events, conduct community service, and work together on other projects. I am also a student ambassador. I help give tours and other group visits for prospective students. I am a very outgoing person, and I love being able to share the love that I have for Carthage to potential students.”
My career goal
“I want to be a general counsel for a professional sports team, and my background in collegiate sports will greatly help me. As a student-athlete, you learn time management skills, teamwork, cooperation, and communication, all of which will be very beneficial to me as I continue down this career path.”
Advice for other student-athletes
“Do it. This has been one of my best decisions, and I have met some of my closest friends because of it. Your teammates become your built-in family here at Carthage as you train and compete together. You make so many amazing memories along the way, and you push yourself every day. Being a student-athlete requires hard work, but that is what makes it incredibly rewarding.”
