Joshua Flores ’26 discovered his passion for lacrosse in fifth grade, when he decided to try a new sport — an experience that ultimately led him to play defense for the Carthage men’s lacrosse team. Now majoring in allied health science, Joshua is balancing his academic and athletic commitments as he prepares for a career in physical therapy. He credits Carthage’s athletic program for giving him hands-on insight into the physical demands and injuries athletes face, which he believes will help him better understand and connect with future patients.

“My biggest accomplishment is the growth I have made as an athlete thanks to coaches David Neff and Dexter Molinaro. Every day, they work on helping each member of our team improve and become the best athletes we can be.”

Why I chose Carthage

“When I looked at colleges, many were too big or the professors there didn’t form personal connections with students. I chose Carthage because there is a small student population, and the professors are present in the classrooms to bond with their students. I also wanted to go somewhere closer to home, and Lake Michigan was a major draw. Also, the athletic program is amazing.”

My favorite team memory

“My favorite memory from Carthage is from my freshman year when we beat Elmhurst in overtime to begin CCIW play.”

How I balance academics and athletics

“I balance my schedule so that I have time to study and do homework before lifting and practicing. I make sure my classes in the spring semester, which is when we play lacrosse, are not as challenging as my fall semester classes. I also make sure I have free time during the day outside of lacrosse and school.”

The support that helps me succeed

“My coach is always helpful and supportive on and off the field, holding me accountable in the classroom and during practices and competitions. Carthage supports athletes by providing tools for our physical and mental health. Our Health and Counseling Center specialists help anyone on campus who is struggling.”

My favorite athletic facility

“My favorite athletic facility is the Marconi Weight Room due to the culture that Coach Molinaro has built and created for our team. He has pillars that our team follows, and he builds this culture with our team in the weight room and on the field. He has transformed the mindset of the Carthage lacrosse team.”

My career goal

“My career goal is to become a physical therapist. Being a student-athlete will help me in this career as I get to experience the injuries that athletes get on the field and will know what it is like when I have a patient come to me with a similar injury or pain.”

Advice for other student-athletes

“My advice is to take the opportunity to continue your athletic career and to use college athletics as a way to stay involved and as a way to get away from the stress and difficulties that school may bring. Sports are a great way to connect with people and socialize with people outside of the individuals you meet on your dorm floor.”
