Ryan Jermier ’27 was introduced to golf at a young age by watching his father practice at the driving range. In high school, he recognized just how important the sport had become to him and joined the school’s golf team. Now at Carthage, Ryan continues to build on that foundation. His involvement with the golf team is helping him develop leadership skills and sharpen his time management — qualities he plans to carry into the future as he pursues a career in business ownership using his degrees in accounting and finance.

“My biggest accomplishment at Carthage was getting named team captain my freshman year. It is one of the greatest honors that I’ve ever had in my life.”

Why I chose Carthage

“I chose Carthage because of my enjoyable experience meeting students, coaches, and admissions staff members. I was also easily swayed by the lake vibes.”

What it means to be a Firebird

“Being a Firebird means embodying respect, integrity, and leadership on and off the course.”

My favorite team memory

“My favorite memory with the golf team is winning the 2023 WLC Fall Invitational. Our coach promised us milkshakes if we won; I’m convinced that was the driving factor to our win.”

What makes the student-athlete community special

“The student-athlete community is very welcoming and committed to their teams at Carthage. Teams volunteer and get involved in different events and intramurals as a fun way to stay connected.”

How I balance academics and athletics

“I balance being a student and an athlete by utilizing time management skills to recognize when I need to spend more time in the classroom or if I have the luxury to practice more.”

The support that helps me succeed

“My coach structures our practices based on times in our schedules that we will be available, so we don’t have to rush our practices. My professors are extremely helpful when I miss class and need to get caught up. Carthage offers multiple gyms for scheduled lifting times, a refuel station to provide protein, The N.E.S.T. for recovery, and convenient tutoring and writing services for free.”

My favorite athletic facility

“My favorite athletic facility on campus is the Semler Fitness Center. I spend a lot of my time there because training is a crucial aspect of an athlete’s performance and balance.”

My career goal

“My career goal is to own and operate my own financial investment business. My experience as a student-athlete will encourage me to become well-rounded, stick out as a leader, make decisions based on time management, and evaluate the quality of my work.”

Advice for other student-athletes

“Although competing at the collegiate level is extremely enjoyable, there is a substantial time investment if you want to improve and perform well. Time management and effort are crucial in getting to the point you desire.”
