Allied Health Science
An allied health science major, Isabela Marquez ’26 has big plans to become an occupational therapist. When choosing the best school for her, she found that Carthage offered what she was looking for — a tight-knit community and valuable opportunities, such as being able to work in the athletic training room. “Having smaller class sizes has given me the opportunity to form deeper connections with my professors,” Isabela says. “It has been incredibly valuable in my academic journey.”
Why Carthage?
“Being near home was important to me, and Carthage gave me that comfort while allowing me to gain independence. But what truly sold me was the breathtaking lake view — waking up to that every day feels like a dream come true!”
Internships or campus employment
“An amazing opportunity Carthage has given me is a student worker position in the athletic training room. As an allied health science major who plans to become an occupational therapist, this experience has been the perfect way to dive deeper into healthcare. Working alongside talented athletic trainers has given me valuable insight into patient care, further shaping my understanding of the field.”
Career goal
“My goal is to become an occupational therapist and possibly pursue a PhD in the field. I have always known that I wanted to work in healthcare, and occupational therapy perfectly aligns with everything I am looking for in a career.”
Best study tip
“Studying was one of the most difficult parts of adjusting to college. I’ve gone through a lot of trial and error, and I am still learning what works best for me. Quizlet is one of my go-to study tools — it has been a lifesaver! I also find that changing my study environment helps keep me focused and motivated. Another game-changer has been using the Pomodoro technique, where I study in short bursts with breaks in between. Taking breaks is important, so I don’t feel guilty if I need to step away.”
Best tip for making friends
“The best way to make friends is really simple — just be yourself. When you’re genuine, the right people will naturally come along. I’ve met some of my very best friends here by staying true to who I am!”
Advice for other students in your major?

Whether you want to become a physician assistant, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or chiropractor or pursue other health-related roles, this major offers diverse pathways. It’s a great choice for anyone passionate about helping others and making a meaningful impact.”
