Jasmin Tapia ’27 is a nursing major with a minor in medical humanities. She made the decision to transfer to Carthage after seeing the benefits and diversity of the nursing program. She credits her professors for their unwavering support and is grateful to be at a college that offers exciting opportunities, such as a study tour to Honduras, where she was able to use her nursing skills in a real-world setting.

Although she is a commuter student, she enjoys her drive to campus and spending time in the Kenosha area. “The vibrant colors of the leaves and the stunning view of Lake Michigan make the drive exciting and is always a great start to my morning,” she says.

“After transferring from a community college where I felt unsupported and stuck, I found Carthage to be a place where I had the potential to thrive.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of its diverse nursing clinical education sites. Unlike many nursing programs that focus solely on bedside care, Carthage’s program provides opportunities to work in settings like nursing homes, schools, hospitals, and more.”

Faculty mentors

“The faculty have helped create a positive college experience for me. My professors are not only kind and respectful but also incredibly motivating. They genuinely care about our success, take the time to work with us individually, and provide valuable out-of-class resources to ensure we are successful.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class so far has been Pathophysiologic Concepts for Nursing Practice with Professor Lynn Mellenthein. I found it fascinating to learn about how the body works and the reasons behind diseases and their development. Starting nursing school was intimidating for me, but Prof. Mellenthein created a friendly student-professor environment that put me at ease. Her support made me feel capable even when I doubted myself, and she helped me believe I belong in this program.”

Unique opportunities

“During J-Term, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Global Perspectives in Healthcare: Service Learning trip to Honduras, led by professors Nancy Reese and Rachel Martinez. While in Honduras, I was able to contribute to various stations, including pharmacy, dental care, kids’ station, medical station, and water filter installation. The experience filled me with gratitude, joy, and a renewed sense of purpose. Sharing this journey with like-minded individuals was truly inspiring.

“Prof. Reese and Prof. Martinez not only showed their unwavering belief in me, but helped deepen my faith and spirituality. Their support, especially during times of high stress, was a source of comfort and encouragement. I feel incredibly blessed to have professors who genuinely care about my well-being and success. I know I can walk into their offices at any time of day and come out with a big smile on my face!”
