“Coming to Carthage made me realize that it’s okay to live my own life and learn more about myself.”

Why Carthage?

“Carthage chose me. It was perfect for me as an art education major —the small school size and the view were unbeatable.”

Faculty mentors

“The faculty have gone above and beyond with my accommodations and understanding that I need to complete assignments differently than others. One of my sociology professors let me do video assignments instead of writing assignments, which helped me succeed greatly in her course.”

Favorite class

“Issues in Living and Dying with Professor Sandie Bisciglia was my favorite course. I took the course because the topic was intriguing, and it helped me better understand the concept of life and death.”

Toughest class

“The toughest class I’ve taken is Cancer Biology. I’ve struggled with keeping up with the in-class content for this course, but it has been deeply rewarding.”

Favorite spot on campus

“It’s a tie between the H. F. Johnson Center for the Fine Arts and the lake. The Johnson Center is open late at night, allowing me to go into the studio and complete work in a timely manner that works for my schedule. The lake reminds me of home and makes me feel like I’m not as far away from my family as I am.”

Favorite memory

“My favorite memory was being offered a position on the Carthage cheer team. It was heartwarming to see my hard work pay off and be able to join the team. Another favorite memory I have is meeting my best friend. We originally met in passing but hung out during the Orientation Week events. I knew I met a life-long friend that day, and I’m grateful for her every day.”

Best tip for making friends

“Try to talk to at least one person in each of your classes. Branching out to others in your classes helps you connect with so many people across Carthage. I know it can be scary, but it will be worth it.”

Biggest surprise

“The biggest surprise was how nice it is to live independently and discover myself. Coming to Carthage made me realize that it’s okay to live my own life and learn more about myself.”

Advice for other students in your major?

“When working on art projects, create pieces you feel connected to so you can continue creating pieces with meaning.”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“My 8-year-old self would be surprised that I decided what I wanted to do with my future. I was all over the place when I was younger, so they would be proud that I found a career path that best suits me.”
