Allied Health Science

Regen Montgomery ’27, a recipient of The Aspire Program Grant, is studying allied health science with a focus in pre-physical therapy. Regen is gaining hands-on experience to support her career goal of becoming a physical therapist through her role as a student employee in the College’s athletic training room. She assists Carthage’s athletic trainers by providing practice supplies, offering first aid, taping joints, working with injured athletes, and assisting on the sidelines during campus sporting events.

In addition to her academic pursuits, Regen appreciates the opportunity to attend a college close to home, allowing her to spend quality time with her family. She also enjoys exploring Kenosha’s downtown area and the picturesque lake just off campus. “My absolute favorite thing about living in Kenosha has to be Lake Michigan,” she says. “I love walking down to the beach to collect rocks, watch the spike ball tournaments with my friends, and enjoy the view of the lighthouse, seagulls, and waves.”

“My professors are undeniably supportive of my career. They are always in my corner, and I know that if I ever need anything, they’re always an email away.”

Why Carthage?

“I chose Carthage because of its beautiful campus, distance from downtown and my hometown, and the community here. The campus is the perfect size, so you’ll always run into someone you know. The view is unbeatable, especially when you’re walking to your 8 a.m. class, and you get to see the sunrise or when you’re studying in a lounge and get to watch the sunset over the lake. Being close to downtown means you get to make more memories during your time here. Being so close to my hometown means I’m close enough not to miss any of the important moments with my family or hometown friends, but far enough that I can be there for all of my on-campus friends and whatever other events that may be taking place.”

Faculty mentors

Carthage faculty are incredibly personable in the classroom and approachable outside of office hours. It makes my education interesting and worthwhile because I can create lasting relationships with the instructors. In addition, my professors are undeniably supportive of my career. They are always in my corner, and I know that if I ever need anything, they’re always an email away.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class at Carthage is tricky to answer; it is either Intellectual Foundations with Professor Marla Polley or Human Anatomy and Physiology with Professor Margaret Wentzell. Both courses were so interactive with the material, which helped me better grasp certain concepts and do better overall. The energy both professors brought to their classes kept me engaged and interested. My classmates also made the classes memorable with out-of-class study groups and in-class discussions.”

Toughest class

“The toughest class at Carthage that I’ve had so far is Physics I. I’ve never taken a physics course before, so it was my first time coming across these topics, unlike some of my other courses where I have at least some experience in the subject matter. Professors Julie Dahlstrom and Lyubov Pidcock do their best to make the class as down-to-the-basics as possible. However, I still encounter some obstacles that I’m constantly working to overcome.”

Favorite spot on campus

“My favorite spot on campus is the Tower Residence Hall. I love to go to the lounges to study, get homework done, have meetings, or hang out with friends. It’s got a great view of the campus and is in a very central location, so I can get to where I need to be if I’m in a hurry. It also has a patio attached to it with a sand volleyball court and a field perfect for playing flag football.”

Best study tip

“My best study tip for students is to draw it out. Grab a study room with a whiteboard, get your dry erase markers, and draw or write it out. If that doesn’t work, grab a friend and have them join you in the study room and teach them of the material you’re trying to learn.”

Best tip for making friends

“The best way to make friends at Carthage is to find someone in your same major. You’re likely to have them in several of your classes, so why not make the best of it and become friends?”

What would your 8-year-old self think of you now?

“When I was eight years old, I was set on becoming a veterinarian and attending a big school. As I got older, I changed my focus from animals to humans and how to treat them instead.”
