Yazminn Lugo ’27 has had a deep passion for art from a young age, having been introduced to the fundamentals of traditional art by her father. This early exposure sparked her interest in exploring various artistic mediums, including painting, sculpting, and digital art, all of which allowed her to express herself creatively. At Carthage, Yazminn is able to build on her artistic foundation as a graphic design major and animation minor. “Because of Carthage, my art has grown,” she says. “I’ve learned how to really bring out the message in my art by adding historical context and color theory.”

At Carthage, Yazminn also applies her skills in a professional setting, working as a graphic design intern and sportscaster for the esports team. Through these experiences, she is gaining valuable knowledge that brings her closer to her ultimate goal of either working for Nintendo as a character illustrator or as a graphic designer with a focus on storytelling animations.

“I chose Carthage for the proximity to my home and courses relating to my major and minor.”

Faculty mentors

“Because of Carthage’s small class sizes, I’m able to build more intentional relationships with my professors. By giving me feedback and advice, they help guide me towards where I’d like to be by the time I graduate.”

Favorite class

“My favorite class to take was my J-Term course in Brazilian jiujitsu. It was not only about learning techniques and sparing, but it helped me with discipline and building a healthy lifestyle.”

Toughest class

“My toughest courses I took at Carthage were Computer Science I and II. Though these courses were a challenge for me, they were also my favorites. The classes taught me that the smartest students are not the ones who already know the material but those who seek and pursue knowledge.”

Campus involvement

“I was a part of Mi Gente my freshman year in an effort to be more involved in my culture and community. I was also a part of the Martial Arts Club, which is a fun way to learn more techniques and work out with friends.”

Unique opportunities

“I had opportunities to get connected with employers at career fairs and explore various internships.”

Internships or campus employment

“I currently have two on-campus jobs for Carthage Athletics — being a graphic designer and a sportscaster for esports. As a graphic designer, I make informational pieces about upcoming games. As a sportscaster, I broadcast information on games and strategies being used in live time.”

Career goal

“My career goal is to work for Nintendo as a character illustrator or get a job climbing the ranks as a graphic designer while making storytelling animations as a hobby.”

Best study tip

“My best study tips for students are — don’t be afraid to ask for help and find ways to make your learning more intentional, regardless of your knowledge level on the subject. For me, reaching out to peer tutors has helped me grasp a deeper understanding of what is being taught and how to teach it to others who might have the same questions as I had.”
