He received several accolades for his performances in tournaments, including multiple Outstanding Witness Awards and an Outstanding Attorney Award.
Beyond preparing for his future in law, Marcus is also pursuing his diverse interests at Carthage. He continues to sing as a member of the Carthage Chorale, helps fellow students sharpen their writing skills as a writing fellow, and actively promotes the College to prospective students as a student ambassador.
Learn about pre-law at Carthage
Why Carthage?
“I was looking for a smaller liberal arts school within the Tuition Exchange network. I toured numerous schools along the East Coast, but none of them stood out to me. I got a postcard from Carthage in the mail and went on a campus tour that summer. I fell in love with Carthage’s campus immediately, but the students, faculty, and staff sealed the deal!”
Faculty mentors
“Being in smaller classes has allowed me to form more meaningful relationships with the faculty at Carthage. I have never felt more encouraged and challenged by instructors until I came to Carthage.”
Favorite class
“My favorite classes at Carthage so far have been Modern Caribbean: From Pirates to the Cuban Missile Crisis with Professor Stephanie Mitchell and Race and Racisms with Professor Katherine Hilson. Modern Caribbean was my first history class at Carthage and fulfilled the Latin American history course requirement for the major. From Blackbeard to Toussaint Louverture to Fidel Castro, I was able to learn a lot about the Caribbean and form questions for future learning. In Race and Racisms, we studied the evolution of racial categories and racism from a sociological perspective. For me, the most fascinating unit was about media representations.”
Internships or campus employment
“I have two jobs on campus. As a student ambassador in the Office of Admissions, I give tours to prospective students, help run scholarship day events, and provide tours for alumni reunions. I also work in the Brainard Writing Center as an advanced writing fellow and a new fellow trainer. The Writing Center is a free resource to all Carthage students and provides a paid job for students skilled in writing and giving feedback to their peers. I have been able to work with students of various ages, majors, minors, and experiences. As one of the new fellow trainers, I guide newly hired writing fellows throughout training for the first semester of their employment.”
Favorite spot on campus
“My favorite spot on campus is definitely the Hedberg Library. The upstairs level has a lot of good spaces for group work, and the quiet atmosphere of the downstairs level is perfect for studying on my own.”
Favorite memory
“I have made so many memories at Carthage with my friends that I don’t think I could choose a favorite if I tried!”
