At Carthage, Mickey Reilly ’24 mastered the art of balancing academics and athletics. While pursuing a communication major and business administration minor, he rose to stardom as a key player on the men’s soccer team. He was named the all-time leading goal and points scorer. He is now fulfilling his dream of being a professional soccer player as a member of the United Soccer League’s Portland Hearts of Pine. He spends his time participating in rigorous physical and mental conditioning in preparation for matches, and travels the country for games.
Mr. Reilly is excited at the prospect of mentoring current Carthage students and plans to stay connected with the Athletics Department. “I continue to stay involved with Carthage because of the lasting impact it had on me, both personally and professionally. The community there, including the coaches, professors, and fellow athletes, became like a second family, and I value staying connected with them.”
How did Carthage prepare you?
“My time at Carthage played a pivotal role in preparing me for my career, both as a professional athlete and in life. The people I encountered were a huge part of that. Coach Paul Leese was helpful in pushing me beyond my limits and helping me develop the mindset required for a professional career. He not only focused on my technical skills, but he also encouraged me to build mental toughness and discipline.
“Overall, Carthage provided a nurturing environment that allowed me to grow, not just as a soccer player, but as an individual. It taught me time management, how to push through adversity, and how to be a leader on and off the field, all of which have been vital in my transition to a professional soccer career.”
Why did you choose Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because my brothers went there. I saw the impact it had on them, academically and athletically. Their experiences, as well as the strong sense of community that they spoke about, really drew me in. Additionally, Carthage is located in such a beautiful setting. The campus itself is stunning. Being close to Lake Michigan provides a peaceful and inspiring atmosphere. I felt it was the perfect place to grow, and it truly lived up to those expectations throughout my time there.”
What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?
“I learned how to be confident and brave in front of new people.”
What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?
“The professors at Carthage were incredibly supportive and personal. They were upfront with me, always available for guidance, and focused on ensuring that I had the tools I needed to succeed. Professor Jon Bruning played a large role in my success. We studied abroad in Europe, and he is a big soccer fan as well. He was the commentator for all the Carthage games. I had him for many of my classes, and we now have a lifelong relationship.”
