Meg Schultz ’27 is thankful to have received the Art T. Keller Scholarship and the Academic Honors Scholarship to attend Carthage. The funding allows her to pursue an elementary education major and studio art minor without financial stress, giving her the freedom to focus on her studies. “Having these scholarships has taken a huge financial burden off of me and my family,” she says. “I do not have to take out as much in loans, which will be great for when I graduate.”
Meg appreciates attending a college in the same state as her hometown, which is just an hour’s drive from the Carthage campus. While she enjoys the convenience of visiting her family whenever she likes, she also values the opportunity to live on campus, connect with her peers, and explore the Kenosha area. “I love living in Kenosha! The downtown area is beautiful and full of so many things to do. Scoops, Slip 56, The Buzz, and Captain Mike’s are some great places for food if you want to eat off campus. Wild Goose Exchange (a Carthage student-owned business!) and To and From are great places to shop downtown. When the weather is nice, going to the Harbor Market is also an amazing time.”

Why Carthage?
“I chose Carthage because of the location and size of the campus. I loved the views of the lake and the Kenosha area. My home is also about an hour from campus, just outside of Milwaukee. I enjoy being able to go home if I want to, but I can also enjoy the college experience on campus.”
Faculty mentors
“All the faculty I have worked with at Carthage have had such a positive impact on my college career. Having relationships with my professors makes me feel like I can ask for help whenever I need it and that I have someone rooting for me at all times.”
Favorite class
“My favorite class at Carthage so far has been Crafts: Book Arts with Professor Lisa Bigalke. In this class, we learned how to make books and covers from scratch. It was not like a class I have ever taken before and was such a great artistic release.”
Campus involvement
“I am involved in Pinky Swear Club and Association of Carthage Education Students, where I serve as president. Being involved on campus is super important. Clubs and their events is where I have met some of my best friends.
Internships or campus employment
“My sophomore year, I worked with United Way of Kenosha County as their education intern. I assisted with their education programs, like Read Across Kenosha and Readers are Leaders. This allowed me to work with KUSD schools, students, and volunteers. I heard about it through my career specialist in The Aspire Center.”
Career goal
“My career goal is to be an elementary school teacher, and an impactful one. I want to be a teacher that students think about years after they left my class and think about all the memories that were made.”
Favorite spot on campus
“I love the comfort of my dorm. But outside of that, the Campbell Student Union is one of my favorite places to meet up with my friends.”
Best tip for making friends
“Join clubs and attend on-campus events! I have met some of my best friends through clubs. It seemed scary at first to go by myself, but putting yourself out there is the first step to success.”
