Marketing Manager at Fleet Feet Chicago

Molly Zaker ’20 was grateful to attend Carthage because it allowed her to double major in marketing and graphic design and participate in the cross country and track and field teams. Ms. Zaker merged her passion for running with the skills she gained in college to thrive in her role as a marketing manager at Fleet Feet Chicago, a retail chain that specializes in outfitting runners with shoes, apparel, and other gear. In her role, she oversees all marketing efforts for Fleet Feet’s eight retail locations, managing traditional media, digital media, event activations, influencer marketing, and more.

“I get to apply the skills I learned in my academics at Carthage to a job that allows me to stay in touch with the sports I love.”

What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I enjoy being able to connect my hobby with my career. I ran cross country and track and field at Carthage, and now I get to apply the skills I learned in my academics at Carthage to a job that allows me to stay in touch with the sports I love.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“Being involved in the SMEDS Internship Program helped me gain real-life work experience and allowed me to be compensated through grants.”

Why did you choose Carthage?

“I wanted to go to a school where I could pursue academics in addition to athletics. The D3 atmosphere of Carthage allowed me to continue to run at a competitive level while being able to put academics and a future career first.”

What opportunities were made possible because of your Carthage experience?

“I met my best friends, bridesmaids, and most importantly, my husband, Patrick Zaker ’20 (married in 2024).”

What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?

Stephanie Domin, head of the women’s cross country coach. Coach Domin believed in me as an athlete and brought out the best of me as a person. She encouraged my professional growth, actively helped me look for jobs, and found me opportunities to grow as a woman. She was my ‘mom’ away from home, and I’m happy to now call her a friend. My Carthage experience would not have been the same without her guidance and support.”

Tips for current Carthage students?

“Say yes to everything. You’re young, and you have the energy! The more experiences you have in college, the more you are exposed to and can learn what you want and don’t want in a career.”
