Carthage musical theatre majors Peyton Kuryanowicz ’28 and Olivia Litton ’25 have advanced to the national semifinals of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Student Auditions.

Peyton and Olivia each took first place in their respective musical theatre divisions in the Midwest regional competition, qualifying them to advance to the semifinals held at Temple University in Philadelphia at the end of June.

“Peyton and Olivia have demonstrated exceptional dedication in their voice studies while preparing for chapter and regional auditions,” remarked their voice instructor, Rita Gentile M.Ed. ’17, M.M. ’20. “They will undoubtedly represent Carthage with distinction on the national stage.”

Only 15 students are selected nationwide to compete in each semifinal category. Peyton and Olivia feel well prepared for this level of intense competition.

“I am beyond thankful for all that I have learned from Carthage, and I feel ready to not only compete in NATS, but also as I start working in the professional world,” said Olivia, who graduates this May. “I plan to focus on acting through my songs. I find that by doing this, I am less nervous, and I am able to trust the vocal techniques that I have worked on with my voice teacher.”

Just completing her first year at Carthage, Peyton says, “I have learned how to take care of my voice to use it to the best of my ability while maintaining healthy singing habits.” She plans to spend the next few weeks refining her presentation for this national stage. As for Olivia, she says, “I have learned to give it my all.”

We’re certain that both of these Firebirds will shine at nationals — and beyond!
